Next event from Kilmainham Inchicore Heritage Group:
Talk: Burial Rites and Burial Rights – A grave concern in early 19th century Ireland
Date: Wednesday 27 March at 6.30pm
Venue: Richmond Barracks
Admission: free, but please email us at kilmainhamInchicoreHeritage@gmail.com to reserve your place
Our next talk will be on the last Wednesday of March when Caoimhín Jiao will talk on the legal and religious background to the founding of Ireland’s first non-denominational burial place – Goldenbridge Cemetery.
A burial rights controversy in 1823 led to a campaign by the Catholic Association to assert the rights of Catholics to a dignified burial, using their own religious rites. The talk will consider the interface between law and religion in the period before the penal laws were fully rescinded.
