April’s Talk at the Mess features historian Fergus Whelan discussing the intertwined stories of James Harold, a Catholic priest, and Felix Rourke, a United Irish rebel colonel. Their significant encounter in Rathcoole during the 1798 rebellion highlights a crucial period in Irish history.
James Harold, after being arrested in the rebellion’s aftermath, was imprisoned for twelve years without trial, including time in the penal colonies of New South Wales and Norfolk Island. Felix Rourke was executed in Rathcoole in 1803 following Robert Emmet’s rebellion.
