Talks at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present.
The Ranch is a small grid of residential streets off the Sarsfield Road that was originally part of Inchicore and in recent years has relocated to Ballyfermot. A place of contradictions, it once backed onto a dump and it produced the poet Thomas Kinsella, who spent his formative years on its streets. Built in the late 1800s, the first occupants were employed by local industry such as the Inchicore Railway Works and the Guinness Brewery. At the same time, it was surrounded by countryside and farmland. The Ranch is a place that many families have lived for generations. Today there are a mixture of old and new residents living side by side in this historic part of Dublin.
Historian in Residence Katie Blackwood will take you through the history of The Ranch, including how it got its name and how many local landmarks are part of its story. Residents of The Ranch (long-term and more recent additions) will also be on hand to share their memories of the area and audience members will be welcome to participate.
